Illegal Abortion in Brazil.
In Brazil abortion is illegal with exceptions for rape and the health of the mother. Yet as anyone could predict, illegal abortions are being performed (as we all know outlawing abortion does nothing for reducing the need, only creating dangerous and unsafe conditions). The BBC recently reported that a family planning clinic has come under investigation for performing abortions and approximately 1,200 women are involved. According to the BBC
"Some 150 women have been charged and at least 30 have been sentenced to do community work...community work in creches or schools for disabled children."
As you can imagine, this is causing outrage by human rights organizations and women's groups. More specifically, it seems like there needs to be a dialogue about this in Brazil and hopefully a change in law. What do you think?

What a GOP majority means for choice...
In Oklahoma the Republicans now have control over both the house and the senate - for the first time in OK history. While it might be difficult to wrap your head around how Oklahoma can move in the opposite direction of the rest of the country, it isn't hard to understand what this means for women and families in Oklahoma.
The new leadership at the Oklahoma Capitol has not been shy about their goals - one of which is putting emphasis on "pro-life" values (read: anti-choice initiatives that restrict access to abortion and other reproductive health services). The Oklahoman reported yesterday, "...anti-abortion legislation could come to the forefront with Republicans controlling both the House and the Senate. Although lawmakers say they’ll work to find common ground, they could clash on key issues.
Also from the same article:
"We’re a pro-life party,” said House Speaker Chris Benge, R-Tulsa. "Social values are very important to House Republicans, and we believe that a strong family is vital to allowing your state to flourish and to be successful.”
To someone who understands the rhetoric of anti-choice lawmakers, this quote scares me. You should be frightened too, because what Rep. Benge is saying is that we are going to continue chipping away at the right to choice, constinue to support abstinence-only-until-marriage programs, deny the effectiveness of comprehensive sex education, and we will do whatever we can to make impede abortion access in this state.
This scares me, does it scare you?

Injunction granted in ultrasound law
On November 1st a temprary injunction was granted to keep SB 1878 from taking effect. This happened in light of the lawsuit filed by The Center for Reproductive Rights on behalf of Tulsa's Reproductive Services, one of the three abortion providers in the state. More about the lawsuit can be found here.
The temporary injuction will remain in effect until March 27 or until a ruling is made in a request for a preliminary injunction - whichever happens first.
SB 1878 was scheduled to go into law on November 1st.
